Extending the journey: Work and careers in an era of a rising State Pension age
13 November 2025
The University of Chicago Booth School of Business, London, EC1 7BL
6pm - 8pm
About the event
Next year, the first group of people will see their State Pension age rise from 66 to 67 – the latest in a series of rises since 2010. Over that time, the employment rate of people in their 60s has increased, but remains far lower compared to people in their 40s and 50s.
Pre-retirement poverty among people in their 60s is growing, and being out of work before reaching State Pension age is a major driver of this trend. Factors such as health, caring or ageism lead many to leave work earlier than they would like to. Automatic enrolment into workplace pensions has helped millions more to save for their future, but at levels which may not give them an adequate income in retirement.
With the third review of the State Pension age now underway, the Standard Life Centre for the Future of Retirement is delighted to bring together a discussion about how to support longer careers in the context of a rising State Pension age. What progress has been made on the agenda of longer working lives since 2010? Which groups are most at risk of not being able to continue working until reaching State Pension age? What needs to change to help people stay in work that supports their health and wellbeing, as well as their financial needs for retirement?
The event will bring together a range of stakeholders to take stock of how the UK is doing on this agenda and debate what the priorities should be for action. We’ll hear the views of experts on how government, employers and individuals should think about longer careers in the context of a rising State Pension age, and there will be opportunities for Q+A and networking.
Please note that the event is in-person only, and places are limited.
